PHAST PHREDDIE & THEE PRECISIONS - Single (26-May-19)

Phast Phreddie single -front PHAST PHREDDIE & THEE PRECISIONS (7")

Tracklist: A.Hungry Freaks Daddy [Zappa]/ B.What A Friend I Have In Whiskey [Fred -Phast Phreddie- Patterson/Jeffrey Lee Pierce].

Recording info: "What A Friend I Have In Whiskey" recorded @ Mars rehearsal studios (@ 665 North Berendo Street), Los Angeles-North Hollywood on 12-Jul-79. A-side recorded in 1985.

Note: Unreleased demo. "Though very raw, "What a Friend I Have in Whiskey" is an early attempt at a jump blues sound for the modern world. This is the fourth take of the song. The vocal is way low because the studio's P.A. system was not great. Also, you can hear the space we saved for the saxophone player we were hoping to get. Anyway, the great thing about this is Jeffrey's guitar playing; it is downright wild--the saving grace of the recording. If it weren't for him, the band wouldn't have existed." Phast Phreddie 2019. They recorded 2 more demos at those sessions ("Faster Than You" and "When I Get My Cadillac") which remain unreleased to date.

Side B Line-up: Fred -Phast Phreddie- Patterson (vocals)/ Jeffrey Lee Pierce (guitar)/ Don Snowden (bass) and Keith K.K. Barrett [The Screamers] (drums).

Note 1: The 2.13.61 and Buddha releases are re-mastered by Phil Klum @ Master Cutting Room, New York. SFTRI CD re-release remastered by John Vestman (in July 2004).

Note 2: Flow Records release (disc 1 and 2) re-mastered from the original two inch master tapes @ Custom Recording Studios, Eindhoven (NL) (January 2006) by Peer Rave with assistance from Gene Temesy. Disc 2 contains the unmixed album as recorded @ Hansa Tonstudio, Berlin with the tracks in the order of they were recorded. The final track, "Country One", is an instrumental that was not included in the final mix. The Flow Records release is the best and most complete version of this album. Phil Klum's remastering sounds good too.

Line-up: Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals/guitar)/ Kid Congo Powers (guitar)/ Romi Mori (bass) and Nick Sanderson (drums), with Blixa Bargeld (guitar on "Yellow Eyes").

Mastered by Peer Rave @ Custom Recording Studios, Eindhoven (NL) and Hans-Jörg Maucksch @ Pauler Acoustics, Northeim (DE).

Recording info 2: Jeffrey Lee Pierce (guitar) from the Gun Club's "Mother Juno" sessions @ Hansa Tonstudio, Berlin (DE) July 1987 and the "Lucky Jim" sessions @ Zeezicht Studios, Spaarnwoude (NL) January 1992.

Notes 1: Volume #1. (Re)Interpretations of Jeffrey's 'lost' songs. While clearing out his attic in 2006, Cypress Grove [Tony Chmelik] came across a bag of dusty old cassettes. He found one marked "JLP Songs". As soon as he listened to it on he remembered what it was; Cypress and Jeffrey rehearsing material (in Summer 1990/1991) for the 1992 album they made together ("Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee"). The 3 country style tunes on the tape did not make the final album.

Notes 2: The 3 songs ("Ramblin' Mind", "Constant Waiting" and "Free To Walk") from the tape are performed 3 times each. Other songs covered are "When I Get My My Cadillac" and " St. Mark's Place" (two 1979 Phast Phreddie & Thee Precisions tracks); "Bells On The River" (a 1985 "Wildweed" live track never recorded); "The Snow Country" (a left over from the 1992 "Lucky Jim" album sessions); "Lucky Jim" (1992); "Just Like A Mexican Love " and "Walkin' Down The Street Doin' My Thing" (a June 1984 leftover from the V/A "Don't Shoot" sessions).

Notes 3: Others playing on the album are Barry Adamson, Simon Fish [aka Willie Love], Spencer P.Jones, Kid Congo Powers, Chris Stein and Rene van Barneveld [Urban Dance Squad]. Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Debbie Harry and Lydia Lunch were never recording at the same studio or at the same time.
