Evolving from the 'Caulfield Grammar School' band (1974-1975), which just played at school social and parties, Boys Next Door started in 1977 and are signed to Mushroom records Suicide 'punk' roster. They play more than 330 live gigs in Australia before moving to London in 1980 and changing their name to The Birthday Party. Discography and Chronology. |
The Boys Next Door played their last show on 28-Feb-80 in Melbourne at the Macy's. They leave for London the next day and change their name to The Birthday Party. They would record two albums and two EPs and play close to 300 live gigs. In August 1983 the band disintegrate when recording their final "Mutiny!" EP. Discography, Chronology and Videography. |
Classic period Bad Seeds. Immediately after The Birthday Party's demise, recording sessions for The Bad Seeds' debut album "From Her To Eternity" album start in London, followed by a "Nick Cave-Man or Myth" tour over Christmas in Australia and a spring tour of Europe, billed as Nick Cave and the Cavemen. First Bad Seeds concerts from May 1984 onwards. Releasing 10 albums, "From Her To Eternity" (1984) album through to "The Best Of" (1998) album, followed by a 2 year break for the Bad Seeds. Approximately 518 live concerts. |

While touring the US with the Bad Seeds in 1984, Nick Cave attempted a few spoken word shows, reading a piece called "Blind Lemon Jefferson". In 1987 he starts reading from his first novel "And The Ass Saw The Angel" (published 1989). "The Death of Bunny Munro" is published in 2009 and "The Sick Bag Song" in 2015, both followed by readings and book signings. Approximately 111 live appearances. |
On rare occasions Nick Cave performed solo on piano. Approximately 34 performances, starting from October 1997. |
A truncated version of the Bad Seeds doing... Bad Seeds songs in theatre settings, which confused bookers and audiences who were expecting a quiet intimate evening, but instead got the usual Bad Seeds onslaught. Approximately 180 shows. The main line-up became Grinderman. |

Transition period Bad Seeds, which sees the departure of founding members Blixa Bargeld (2003) and Mick Harvey (2009), and the death of their tour manager Rainer Jesson (2007). Recording and releasing releasing 4 albums, from "No More Shall We Part" (2001) through to "Dig Lazarus Dig! (2008). Aproximately 250 live concerts. |
Recording and releasing 2 albums, "Grinderman" (2007) and "Grinderman 2" (2010), as well as 8 singles. The 'little band' line-up creating 'garage-rock' based on Warren Ellis' wicked loops. They cause mayhem at gigs all over the world. Approximately 140 live shows. Ended in 2011. |
Present period Bad Seeds, marked by Cave's close collaboration with Warren Ellis, with whom he creates all music jointly. Death of Conway Savage (2018) and departure -due to illness- of Thomas Wydler (2018) and Martyn P.Casey (2024). Recording and release of the trilogy "Push The Sky Away" (2013), "Skeleton Tree" (2016) and "Ghosteen" (2019) albums, followed by "Wild God" (2024). The Bad Seeds have become arena-filling rock royalty. Approximately 330 concerts so far. |
