Thinking my tenure with the Bad Seeds was going to end after that one tour. I'd agreed to join them onstage and play with Jeffrey again. [...] That one-off felt good enough that I agreed to do a European tour with them immediately after the Bad Seeds tour [which ended in New York on 02-Nov-86]." from "Some New Kind of Kick: A Memoir", book by Kid Congo Powers (2022).

[...] With a cloudy look, he wandered across the stage like a blind horse, seeking support from anything that could give him something to hold on to, or crawling around the stage on his stomach, swearing at everything he didn't like. Aside from his shrill rebel yell, singing didn't get much done, let alone playing guitar."

Sneek 30-Apr-87

30-Apr-87
NL Sneek,Bolwerk
[with Mad Cowboy Experience]

Review: Taken from Leeuwarder Courant 01-May-87. "In addition, there were several irritations due to detuned guitars and malfunctions in the equipment. All this stirred up the guys in such a way that this was not the best, but certainly the most exciting concert I ever saw from The Gun Club. In addition, they played well, especially by drummer Nick Sanderson and temporary worker Barry Adamson, who plays his bass much, much better than Pierce's Japanese girlfriend Romi [...] And Pierce writhed regularly on the stage floor, howling like a lone coyote. That is why this was a successful concert, but the previously mentioned objections raise questions about the further future of the band. In that respect, it's writing on the wall that The Gun Club still hasn't made a record almost a year after their reunion. There is therefore every reason to believe that the group has had its day." Three months later the Gun Club would start the recording sessions for their masterpiece "Mother Juno" album.

August 1987. London-Shepherd's Bush. Jeff is visited several times by Mark Lanegan, who's having a few gigs (6/7-Aug-1987) in London with his band The Screaming Trees. "On one of my first visits to Jeffrey's flat in Shepherd's Bush, I asked him about lyrics in a song [of his] I was able to discern. 'Ah, shit!' he said. 'That's from an old folk song I heard when I was a kid. I always use lines from other songs in mine; no one ever notices and it helps me to have a starting place.' And with that began a master class in songwriting from my favorite musician of all time."
From "Sing Backwards and Weep", a memoir by Mark Lanegan.

November 1988. "Getting disentangled from the sticky mess our U.K. label Red Rhino left behind when they folded, I got inot my head that I could relocate back to America and negotiate with labels over there. We were forbidden to play [live in] London and other major UK cities until we were out there promoting 'their' product. We made a series of demos and some showcase gigs, but it was leading nowhere." December 1990. Nick Sanderson leaves the band. He joins World Of Twist. The Gun Club enlists two interim drummers: Desi Desperate (a.k.a. Peter Kablean) [who did drum duties in the Gun Club before (November/December '84) and in Fur Bible in 1985/86] and Nigel Preston [ex- Theatre Of Hate, The Cult, who is a friend of Nick Sanderson). Nigel Preston then was in the Dublin band The Baby Snakes who's next record Jeffrey Lee Pierce was set to produce in 1991, but Nigel landed in prison (for armed robbery) in 1990 and these plans fell through. On his release from prison he became The Gun Club's drummer for a few live shows in the Summer of '91, while remaining a member of the Baby Snakes. He died on April 1, 1992 of a drug overdose at the age of 32.

1991
The year in which the "Divinity" mini album is recorded and released. The band only plays a handful of live shows.

Line-up #5C (London: May-June 1991):
Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals/guitar)/ Kid Congo Powers (guitar)/ Romi Mori (bass) and Desi Desperate (a.k.a. Peter Kablean) (drums).

ICP studios May-91

May 1991
BE Brussels,ICP Recording Studios (@ 37-45 avenue Emile de Beco), recording and mixing the "Divinity" mini album in 5 days. Engineered by Michiel Dierickx. Songs recorded: Sorrow Knows/ Richard Speck/ Keys To The Kingdom and Black Hole [The Urinals].

Note: Upon arrival at the studio Jeffrey and Desi went to check out the studio. They started jamming, Desi had a drum riff and Jeffrey played guitar, engineer Michiel Dierickx hit the record button, and that became "Sorrow Knows". Jeffrey wrote the words that night. It was the only time Jeff recorded a song spontaneously, one take, no rehearsal. The next morning Kid added his guitar, Romi the bass and Jeffrey the vocals. The drum tracks for "Richard Specks", "Keys To The Kingdom" and "Black Hole" were also recorded that same day. Those 3 tracks had been rehearsed in London. After the sessions Kid, Romi and Desi travelled back to London, leaving Jeffrey behind because he had visa problems.

1993
The year in which the "Lucky Jim" album is recorded and released.

Rainer Lingk and Robert Marche in turns take Kid's place on guitar for the live dates.

Line-up #6A (London: February 1993):
Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals/guitar)/ Romi Mori (bass) and Nick Sanderson (drums).

xx-Feb-93/21-Feb-93
NL Haarlem,Bananas Studios (@ Bakenessergracht 97),recording and mixing the "Lucky Jim" album. Engineered by Peer Rave. Songs recorded: Lucky Jim/ A House Is Not A Home/ Cry To Me/ Kamata Hollywood City/ Ride/ Idiot Waltz/ Up Above The World/ Day Turn The Night/ Desire/ Anger Blues.

Note: "Jeffrey had invited me to sing background vocals on a track late one night in Haarlem, a town outside Amsterdam, while I was touring [with the Screaming Trees]. Having already done a full performance for a Dutch television show [21-Feb-1993], a live [VARA FM] radio broadcast, and then a full concert at legendary Amsterdam venue the Paradiso that day, I had been exhausted when I arrived at the studio past midnight. It was their last day recording [the "Lucky Jim" album] and everyone was frantic to finish. The band were wrapping up overdubs and vocals and then mixing them all on the same night. Jeffrey asked me to sing a high harmony on one of the tunes but my voice was already so flicked from three shows that day, done right in the middle of a six-week tour, I was unable to get up above his substantially higher normal range. After a couple goes, I'd said, 'God damn, this has been a dream opportunity, to sing with my favorite band ever. But we both know this sounds like shit, please don't use it.' He sadly agreed. 'This is the song I really wanted you on but it was getting late and we mixed it already.' He had the engineer put on the mix of the song he'd originally planned for me to sing on. It was the title track, "Lucky Jim." I was completely blown away and inwardly angry as hell I'd not arrived in time. It was simply one of the greatest songs he'd ever written and the recording was pristine, the words completely evocative. As I realized the missed opportunity, I was crushed." From "Sing Backwards and Weep", a memoir by Mark Lanegan.

Note: Day on poster is wrong. "While sitting in [Mark Lanegan's] living room that afternoon [Jeffrey Lee Pierce] bluntly said, 'Give me some heroin, will ya, man?' He had known I was strung out for a long time but he'd never shown any interest in dope until that moment. I went into the closet and grabbed a clean outfit and a small piece of the sticky black tar. I then went into the kitchen and got a spoon, came out, gave it to him, and he went into the bathroom to fix. When he returned his mood was much lighter and he said, 'Fuck it. I don't give a shit if anyone shows up or not.' 'I'm sure there will be plenty of people totally psyched to see you tonight, Jeffrey.' 'Whatever,' he said and then turned on the TV. He silently stared at it for an hour or so before leaving for his soundcheck at some small, recently opened club directly under the monorail on Fourth Avenue. I arrived early at the gig, wanting to see another old pop/punk band from Orange County, Agent Orange, who were opening. The room sounded terrible, like the small, former storefront it was, not a place made for live music. My enthusiasm for Agent Orange waned quickly due to the poor acoustics in the room. It made every note seem as though it were being played from under a wet mattress. Not pleasing in the least. The audience turnout for the Gun Club wasn't the worst I'd ever seen, but it was far from good. Maybe seventy-five people at the most stood in the room as they took to the tiny stage, about a half foot higher than the floor. The reaction was lukewarm as the band played songs from their most recent record, Lucky Jim. The crowd excitement rose to a slightly higher level than the sort of typically bored, show-us-something, hipster disinterest just three times during the set, when Jeffrey had busted out the beloved punk/blues classics from the first Gun Club record. "For the Love of Ivy," "She's Like Heroin to Me," and especially "Sex Beat" brought loud cheering and singing along from the small, previously tepid crowd. It was as if I were watching Chubby Checker on an oldies tour and he finally played "The Twist." With an extensive back catalog of brilliant, beautiful, straight-to-the-head, -heart, and -genitalia songs, albums, and performances to his credit, still hardly anyone seemed to give a damn about my idol-turned-friend, except when he was playing his most obvious 'hits'." 1995
The year in which Jeffrey returns to the US for ever.
The Gun Club play their final shows in Los Angeles. Jeffrey's health is clearly on the decline.

First half of 1995
Jeffrey was expected to present himself in a London court to defend himself in the sword incident of November, but instead he elopes to Osaka, Japan, doing radio shows and even guesting live on stage with a band called The Evil Hoodoo. Misadventure hits him when he's mugged and robbed (from his passport, luggage and guitar), and left in a ditch. He ends up in hospital on the moment the Kobe earthquake happened (January, 17). In the spring he manages to leave Japan, goes to pick up his stuff in London (after the sword incident he was requested to leave the country), and moves back to Los Angeles (his mother's house/close to the Viper Room).

In March 1995 Elizabeth Montague [of Tin Brood] was asked by Jeff do audition for the position of bass player in a new line up of The Gun Club. She does a jam one day at Brendan Mullen's place in Hollywood, but later in the year (upon Mike Martt's suggestion) Jeff picks Brock Avery and Randy Bradbury from Wayne Kramer's [MC5] rhythm section instead.

23/25-Jun-95
US Los Angeles,The Master Frequency Studios,Jeffrey Lee records "Pasties And A G String" for "Step Right Up", a Tom Waits tribute album. JLP: vocals, all instuments: Master Frequency. Produced by Gary Dobbins.

July/August 1995
Jeffrey resides in Osaka, Japan.

Mr Moo 1995

July/August 1995
Jeffrey tries to get back in shape. He and Mike Martt rehearse at Jeff's mom's house. Jeff jams one or two times with an all star band on Sunday (or Wednesday) nights @ the Viper Room (with Steve Jones [Sex Pistols], Clem Burke [Blondie], John Norwood Fisher [Fishbone], Keith Morris [Circle Jerks] and Mike Martt [Tex & the Horseheads]).

Together with Johnny Depp, Jeff is also one of the driving forces behind the Monday night "Mr Moo's Grab Bag/Wild Ride" acting series. At the same time he gets involved with the Death Row Records people, having an idea to merge punk rock with rap music. In the meantime Jeff is working on his autobiography ("Go Tell The Mountain") for Henry Rollins' 2.13.61 publishing company.

xx-Sep-95
US Los Angeles. A three-day demoing session. Jeffrey Lee Pierce with Mark Lanegan [Screaming Trees]. One song, "Kimiko's Dream House" ended up on Lanegan's 2001 "Field Songs" album.

Note: "[Jeffrey] had the music and the melodies. Writing with him was not like writing with anybody else because Jeffrey was very strict, hahaha! It was a pretty serious affair, although he laughed a lot, you know mainly at the wacky things that he would say. [...] I’m sure that none of this stuff he gave me he recorded before… I don’t know if there are any versions of him doing any of this stuff with lyrics or anything. [...] I don’t know, [I did about] four or five [songs with him]. It was just bits and pieces. It wasn’t a whole record. We’re talking about a three-day period of just sitting around. He was getting ready to go to Japan. I was workin’ on a record already. And we just spent three or four days together making home recordings and stuff, on a tape player. Not even a four-track or anything, it was like a Radio Shack tape player. Then he left the day after we were done for Japan. The trip proved fatal because when he came back, that was when he was real sick, and it was shortly thereafter that he passed away." Mark Lanegan interviewed for Stomp and Stammer,2001.

September/October/November/December 1995
Jeffrey returns to Japan (Osaka and Tokyo) where he encounters (and hangs out with) Johnny Depp and Jim Jarmusch (who are doing promotion work for their "Dead Man" film project).

Jarmusch told Libération newpaper in Paris: "These few days revealed the loneliness of this talented man that I saw as someone who had fled the world to take refuge in a foreign metropolis. A year later (sic), he was dying in L.A., where I had gone to visit him, at the beginning of 1996, without knowing he was ill. His approach to the blues, to punk and to country was seminal for many of us - musicians, writers or cineastes. Amazing guy".

Note: Next to last Gun Club show. Benefit for Travis John Alford. Travis John died in December 1995 of AIDS related causes. Kid interviewed @ newyorknighttrain.com:"We [Congo Norvell] actually played a benefit concert for this friend of mine Travis John Alford. We were raising money for him to make this record ["Lucky Pierre"]. He was a friend of mine who was dying of AIDS and trying to finish this record. So me and L7 and Carla [Bozulich] and the Geraldine Fibbers and The Gun Club and I think even Congo Norvell played. I did double duty. And we made concert and raised a lot of fun and it was really good. And that show went really well."

1995
Jeffrey's friends Keith Morris [Circle Jerks/OFF!] and Mike Martt [Tex and the Horseheads] try, in vain, to check Jeffrey into a Marina Del Ray rehab/hospital.

"We actually checked Jeffrey into a rehab/hospital down in Marina Del Rey against his will. Mike Martt [...] and I had to take him down. He was already dying. Our friend Sal [Jenco] who ran the Viper Room said, “Hey, look, I’ve got a doctor in Beverly Hills. I’ll pay for the visit.” We took Jeffrey to this doctor and he gave Jeffrey three months. This was a couple of months before he died. He wanted to go back to Japan because he had fallen in love with a nurse over there. He thought he could go back over there and she would take care of him. One of the problems was that he had been kicked out of the country by the U.S. Consulate. So we checked him into this hospital/rehab and the doctor there said, “Don’t believe what the doctor in Beverly Hills told you about having only three months to live. I can get him over to UCLA Hospital and we can cut him open and have a transplant and give him a new organ. He’ll be all right. I’ll supervise the operation and let the students work on him and we’ll get him back in shape.” And we were totally into that. Jeffrey was angry because the money used to get him into rehab was money that he would have used to fly back to Japan." Keith Morris [Circle Jerks/OFF!] interviewed for Bored Out.

Note 2: "Then a couple months later we did another [show] and it was really terrible. I was getting fucked up again. I think that was the last thing we did. I don’t think [Jeffrey] played any shows after that. Certainly, I didn’t. Some people said that was really great and amazing, because a lot of people hadn’t seen it. But if you had seen it, it wasn’t so great. It was really quite sad and horrible. Jeffrey looked bad. After that [Jeffrey] had gone to his father’s to dry out." Kid Congo Powers interviewed for Bored Out.

December 1995
Jeffrey is admitted to a Los Angeles hospital.

1996-2015
Aftermath.

Early 1996
Jeffrey Lee Pierce moves to a horrible Comfort Inn hotel on Highland Ave, lets some hookers stay with him who rob him of everything including his cowboy boots. Jeff then moves to his father's house Salt Lake City (UT).

March 1996
US NY,New York City. Kid Congo Powers asks Peter Aaron [Chrome Cranks] to join a new line-up of the Gun Club. Peter suggests to get Bob Bert [also Chrome Cranks] on drums. Jeffrey was about to move to New York to record an album and do some gigs.

"Jeffrey at one point was dying and I had some free time to hang with my brother and I was watching him die. [..] Jeffrey and I, at one point we were going to start a band. Jeffrey wouldn't do that with just anybody. As many great people as Jeffrey was surrounded by he could have started a band with, he chose me. [..] So he started playing a bunch of songs and I recorded them on a micro cassette player, and part of the music from the eulogy, which is the song 'Jeffrey Lee Pierce', was one of the last riffs he played for me.[..] So he plays the song, I record it (for the OFF! second EP) and I hang out with him up in Salt Lake City at his dad's house. I was up there for about a week and I left and a couple of weeks later he fell over in the bathroom and he was dead." Keith Morris [Circle Jerks/OFF!], interviewed for The Quietus, September 5th, 2011.

25-Mar-96
US UT,Salt Lake City,Jeff's father's house,Jeffrey Lee Pierce is found unconcious and rushed to hospital where he remains in a coma until he dies on 31-Mar-96 from a brain haemorrhage/stroke. Incidentally this date was the deadline he had been given by Henry Rollins' publishing company (2.13.61) for finishing his "Go Tell The Mountain" book.
